One of the main things I find holds people back from reaching for their goals is that they fail to focus on where they are now. Sometimes its because their present circumstances are not very comfortable, sometimes its just that they are so focused on the future that they are simply unaware of where they are now. Whatever the reason, if you want to move forward you have to do it from a firm platform of reality, otherwise you’re lost before you even start!
Imagine reading a map to try to get somewhere – what’s the first thing you have to do? Find where you are now of course. If you don’t do that it doesn’t matter how detailed the map is, or even how brilliant your map reading skills are, the chances of you getting to where you want to be are very slim!
Some people will not deal with reality because they don’t like what they see! They really wish they were somewhere else where the rules are different. But, like it or not, you have to deal with the rules where you are, otherwise you’re just going to waste time and energy trying to change things that may not even want to be changed. On the other hand, refusing to engage with reality is a great excuse to use when you don’t get the results you think you deserve! And it is just that, an excuse! If you drop something heavy on your foot there’s not a lot of point in blaming gravity!
