Its an interesting question. I was sitting in a 5 Star hotel this afternoon waiting for a business associate to arrive – its always a fantastic place for people watching so I’d got there early! Anyway, there was an immaculately dressed gentleman sitting near me obviously talking to some business associates. He was all smiles and charming gestures until a waitress committed some “terrible wrong” – he snarled a mouthful of abuse at her and then immediately went back to his charm offensive.
Who was he kidding? I can’t remember who it was who originally said “people who are nice to you and rude to waiters are not nice people”. Did he think his associates would be impressed at his assertiveness? Did he think it made him look big or important? Or was he just simply a bully with low self esteem?
I’ll never know. But what I do know is that the most successful people in the world are those who are able to relate to and communicate easily with people at all levels. People who are true masters of their lives can have deep meaningful discussions with taxi drivers and royalty, with rock stars and gardeners or with delivery boys and CEOs! There’s no “side” to them. They treat everyone they meet with the same level of respect. They don’t need to feel superior because deep down they understand that all of us are the same.
The thing is, you never know who you’re talking to, or who they know, or for that matter, where they’ll be in ten years time! Take the time to really connect with everyone you meet and let them meet the very best you there is. You might be really surprised by what you learn! And anyway isn’t it best to treat every single person you meet as the most important person in your life at that time? Because they just might be!
This is so true Susan. I went out for dinner with a friend of mine who had a true yogi spirit …until he started sarcastically commenting at the parking-warden about lack of spaces to park his car…it put me off my friend the entire dinner!!! Shame on people like those.
Hey Noura, that is sad. I think sometimes people feel that if they have been talked down to by people they feel are “above” them, then its OK for them to do the same – which is yet another reason to be respectful to everyone.
Amazing that people still wear masks..well maybe not so amazing..sigh
To be honest I think we will always wear masks, its part of being human. But how much happier would we be if we all wore smiley masks?
