Here’s the thing about about time management: you can’t do it! No one can manage time! Even wise old King Canute over a thousand years ago knew this! Time and Tide waits for no one!
So why oh why is so much rubbish written about time management?
The truth is that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day and the difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is as simple as this – successful people spend more time doing the things they need to do to make themselves successful than unsuccessful people!
You have exactly the same number of hours as all of the super-achievers!
“The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.” – Stephen Covey
Its all a matter of prioritising. All the positive thinking “secrets” in the world will not help you one bit unless you figure out what you need to do to get what you want. Once you’ve figured that out you need to create a strategy for doing it.
It really is that simple.
I’m not saying its easy though! You will need to be focussed, determined and strong. You will need to learn to stop pleasing people (including yourself!) and start doing what needs to be done until its done. You will need to learn to resist the temptation to do “busywork” and focus on work that gets results, and its not always easy to tell the difference! You may have to get up earlier, sleep less, or sometimes even sleep more but watch less TV! You may not always get to go out with your buddies as much as you’d like to, but it will be worth it!
